The company began with bicycles and motorcycles before producing its first automobiles. In 1925, it merged with Škoda Works, a major industrial conglomerate. Throughout the 20th century, Škoda became the national car brand of Czechoslovakia. After the fall of communism, Škoda became part of the Volkswagen Group in 1991, which significantly improved its quality and reputation.
